Course Aims

To improve the skill set of operatives who work on or close to the roadways and use road signs and traffic lights to protect motorists,pedestrians and the workforce on the highway.

Who Is The Course Suitable For?

All personnel who require to have an understanding of the current Streetworks Code of Practice for Signing, Lighting and Guarding, under the New Roads and Streetworks Act 1991.

Course Objectives

The objectives of the Signing, Lighting and Guarding course are:

  • Improved safety within the highway.
  • Better planning of work in the highway and communications with colleagues to set up and take down the guards to the workplace.
  • Compliance with SWQR (Streetworks Qualifications Register) registration scheme.

Course content:

The NRSWA Signing, Lighting and Guarding Course will teach candidates:

  • The skills and knowledge necessary to sign, light and guard streetworks and roadworks in line with the New Roads and Streetworks Act 1991, revised 2002 Code of Practice.
  • Planning a signing, lighting and guarding project.
  • Types of works, basic principles of signing and guarding and the legal requirements.
  • On-site risk assessment, methods of traffic control, speed control and operating portable traffic signals.
  • Works on footways, cycle lanes, track and cycle routes, and near tramways and railways.

Course Requirements:

  • Delegates should bring safety boots, hard hat, eye protection, waterproof clothing and high visibility clothing to use in the practical exercises.
  • Delegates can bring with them any materials used by their own employer, copies of risk assessments, or management systems, so that they can see how their materials fit in to the context of the training.

Course fee includes SQA registration and certification cost.
